Saudi Aramco And CLG Announce New Oil Processing Venture

Chevron Lummus Global LLC (CLG) and Saudi Aramco have officially started their Luberef II Yanbu Refinery Expansion Project.

Hydrocarbon Engineering reported on the scheme, whereby CLG is bringing its hydroprocessing technologies to the expansion, which will work alongside technology developed by Saudi Aramco to enable the production of premium Group II and Group III base oils.

This is a significant step for Saudi Aramco, which until now has only been able to produce Group I base oils, which are of the lowest quality.

Machinery Lubrication explains that Group II oils are hydrotreated, while Group III oils are hydrocracked. Both also have a lower sulphur content than their Group I counterparts.

By partnering with CLG, the firm now has access to its ISOCRACKING, ISOWAXING and ISOFINISHING technologies.

According to the news provider, "a major benefit for the region will be significant premium base oil supply to the west coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula".

When it announced the collaboration last month, CLG noted that it was the combination of its ethylene cracker technology and Saudi Aramco's proprietary Thermal Crude to Chemicals technology that was important to the venture.

Leon de Bruyn, managing director at CLG, commented: "We are excited to be working with Saudi Aramco and making a positive impact on our industry by demonstrating an innovative approach to crude chemicals."

Whatever oil and gas project you're involved in you'll want the highest quality parts to ensure all the technology works as it should. Invest in Hy Lok valves and you can rest assured that you're using the best parts available.
