1 Step Closer To Automotive Fuel Cell Stack Mass Manufacture

1 Step Closer To Automotive Fuel Cell Stack Mass Manufacture

Thursday 11th May 2017

Intelligent Energy, a company that works to deliver clean energy solutions for the automotive, distributed energy, diesel replacement and aerial drone markets, has launched a new programme to drive the mass manufacture of fuel cell stacks for the automotive sector.

Teaming up with CEA Tech-Liten, a pan-European industry group has now been set up to facilitate the commercialisation of fuel cells for this particular market. The €3.5 million programme will make creating a strong platform for stack production for zero emission vehicles the focus moving forwards.

It's hoped that the programme outputs will show how operational and supply chain costs can be reduced as a result of the seamless integration of advanced technology perfect for automated production and digital manufacturing techniques. This blueprint design will then enable build-to-print machines with ready to scale production capacity to meet the requirements of over 50,000 fuel cell stacks come the year 2020.

"With the wealth of experience we have in this area resulting from our on-going joint manufacturing venture with Suzuki (SMILE), in addition to almost 30 years of fuel cell development, we have the know-how and capability to ensure we support and mobilise this ecosystem of partners," group CEO of Intelligent Energy Martin Bloom said.

A new Global Markets research report into the automotive fuel cell market found that it's likely the market will hit 14,765 units by 2023, with interest climbing off the back of growing consciousness regarding the effects of pollution. Lower operating costs and less maintenance will also help drive market share for hydrogen fuel cells in this sector.
