Scotland Food & Drink Exports Up 11%, Report Reveals

Friday 30th June 2017

Food and drink exports in Scotland have climbed by more than 11 per cent in the first quarter of 2017, with £1.2 billion worth exported in the first three months of the year - up by £124 million on 2016.

The latest report from Scotland Food and Drink has just revealed that Scottish salmon and whisky were at the top of the export chart for the period, with the EU still the country's biggest regional export market outside the UK.

James Withers, chief executive of the organisation, noted that in light of this fact it's critical that smooth and ongoing access to the European market be ensured in order to support the future of the sector.

He did add, however: "We are strongly committed to extending our global footprint well beyond Europe, something that the Scotch whisky industry had led the way on. So it's very encouraging to see such strong growth in Asia and North America, with rises of 50 per cent to 70 per cent in the value of food sales in those markets so far this year."

This comes as head of economics services with Quality Meat Scotland Stuart Ashworth emphasised the importance of improving supply chain communications in order to unlock opportunities in the future after Brexit negotiations have taken place.

He suggested that stronger relationships between those operating in different parts of the supply chain would be the result of improving communications - and that there would still be plenty of opportunities after Brexit, although it would likely be touch and challenging moving forward.
