Petrochemical Company In Fracking Battle With The National Trust

Wednesday 26th July 2017

Ineos, one of the biggest petrochemical manufacturing companies in the world, is threatening the National Trust with legal action over the conducting of seismic surveys at Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire.

According to the BBC, plans to look for shale gas in Sherwood Forest and its surrounds have been somewhat controversial because of environmental issues surrounding extraction (or fracking) and the increase in fossil fuel use.

Ineos has said that the Trust has blocked any contact from them for nearly a year and it is now thinking about seeking a court order since it already has permission in place from local landowners for the non-invasive survey.

In a statement, Ineos said: "If the National Trust refuses to change its position, Ineos will have no choice but to write to the Oil and Gas Authority, asking for permission to seek a court order enforcing its rights to carry out these surveys on National Trust land."

The National Trust's stance on fracking is that the organisation has a presumption against it on their land because natural gas is a fossil gas. Mining processes taking place on land not owned by the Trust could also see both environment and landscape affected and the group would object if its places were affected adversely.

It is now calling for all nature reserves, protected wildlife areas and national parks to be frack-free zones, while full environmental assessments should be carried out for each and every drilling proposal. Furthermore, the Trust would like to see the shale gas industry pay for pollution clean-ups as well as the costs of its own regulation.
