Cuadrilla Highlights Economic Benefits Of Fracking

Wednesday 23rd August 2017

There has been a great deal of controversy around fracking in the UK, with many people concerned about what the practice will mean for the environment and their local area.

Cuadrilla is one of the firms that has been granted a licence to carry out fracking activities in the country and has faced protests from many over its work. However, it has recently highlighted the economic benefit of its activity for Lancashire, the Blackpool Gazette reported.

According to data from the company, construction work at its shale gas exploration site at Preston New Road, near Blackpool, has seen more than £1 million invested in the local economy between March and June this year.

The total amount spent by the firm now stands at £2.9 million, up from the £1.4 million recorded in March.

Francis Eagan, CEO of Cuadrilla, said that this clearly shows there has been a significant economic benefit to the local area as a result of the company's fracking activity.

He added that as they begin to drill the new wells the company is "proud to continue to put Lancashire first in order to ensure the county continues to benefit".

But a campaigner for Friends of the Earth Rose Dickinson said that putting Lancashire first should mean "listening to what people say, and they don't want fracking".

The Preston New Road site is currently the only fracking site in Lancashire, although Cuadrilla is due to appeal against the decision to ban fracking from the Roseacre Wood site, with a public enquiry into this decision due in April 2018.
