McCain Invests In New Food Production Facility

Friday 8th September 2017

McCain - a brand that's best known for its oven chips - is investing £100 million in its North Yorkshire production facility, which will see the site in Scarborough get a full renewal.

The company has been based at the location for nearly 50 years and this particular facility is one of its most successful.

Scarborough Borough Council approved the plans for the work recently and councillors gathered with McCain GB bosses for the ground-breaking ceremony this week, The Business Desk reported.

Nick Vermont, regional CEO for McCain GB & Ireland, told the news provider that the investment in the site is designed to ensure it is able to operate for the company for many more years to come.

"As well as upgrading equipment, we will also be delivering broader environmental benefits, such as installing state-of-the-art odour reduction technology," Mr Vermont noted.

McCain currently has four factories in the UK, as well as its head office, which is situated in Scarborough. The company works with over 300 British potato growers and buys 15 per cent of the country's potato crop each year, making it the biggest purchaser of the root vegetable in the UK.

The company is also keen to introduce renewable energy sources at its facilities where it can. Its Whittlesey factory, for instance, is able to generate 70 per cent of its own energy using wind turbines and an anaerobic lagoon.

This site also features a reverse osmosis, self-contained water treatment plant, which has cut water usage at the factory by 25 per cent since its introduction.

Make sure you use Hy-Lok valves if you are renewing or constructing a new food production plant.
